Mix Tape 019

Candye Kane
A moment to say thanks.  Boss Logan provided several home-made mix tapes of his own.  They contain some real gems and some never heard before stuff by yours truly.  Shawn has been contributing for a while and I am deeply indebted.  And thank you TomK for your past contributions, some of which I may be unknowingly using.  Thanks to Mike Markesich for putting out the definitive and the only one of it's kind reference book on 60s garage.  The book is a must for all you 60s garage devotees. Info can be gotten at http://www.pricelessinfopress.com/.  It's worth the price.   Last and not least, thanks for those of you who take the time to leave a comment.

See below for scan credits.  Enjoy!

1. "In the Summer" - Bill Fury - Decca, 1963 - contributed by the Boss (Logan)

2. "Martian Boogaloo" - Thee Martian Boyfriends - from 2010 on Lost in Tyme Records, fantastic album from this Belgian group

3. "Hey Hey…We're Caroine And the Treats" - Caroline and the Treats - recently released -  Caroline And The Treats is a Norwegian garage rock outfit fronted by former porn actress Caroline Andersen.  Courtesy of Shawn.

4. "Back in the 60s" - The Mystic Surfers - from their 2008 album of the same name.  The Mystic Surfers = Merrell Fankhauser

5. "The Only Time" - The Wanderers - USA, 1965 - included Robert Lamm, founding member of Chicago

6. "The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil" - Jefferson Airplane - From 1967’s “After Bathing at Baxters,” RCA - "Pooneil" refers to singer/songwriter Fred Neil, who was a very influential Folk musician.

7. "When I Woke Up This Morning" - Bop Chords - Holiday, 1957 - Harlem, N.Y.’s Bop Chords recorded only three single releases during an all-too-brief career at the dawn of the rock and roll era. To this day, there are no known photographs of the group. Yet R&B vocal group harmony fans fondly recall the sounds of The Bop Chords, their doo-wopping regional best-seller “Castle in The Sky” and the days when a group of untrained youngsters could go from a street corner to a recording studio to Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater in a matter of weeks.

  3. Thanks for another great tape Glenn, and I sure appreciate the shout out. I liked the The Bill Fury tune, while looking up his bio I was struck by his resemblance to the Nick Rivers character portrayed by Val Kilmer in the movie "Top Secret". If anyone hasn't seen this movie, it's well worth watching, in Kilmer's film debut he plays rock and roll idol Nick Rivers who travels behind the Iron Curtain to sing at a music festival and becomes embroiled in some cold war shenanigans. The music in the movie is great, Kilmer does all of the singing, and pulls it off with style.

My favorites were from The Bop Chords, Tyrone Davis (what a great record!), Garage Gods and Candye Kane (what a great set of t!ts)

    Thanks again Glenn
