Mix Tape 020

Autumn officially begins on September 22, 10:49 A.M. EDT. So sez God. Or Copernican theory or whatever.  But for some of us, it ended (this year) on September 3rd, Labor Day. Such indecision.  We can't even decide on its proper name. Here, we're sort of undecided as always so we'll end it today for selfish reasons… in order to squeeze in a few more great summer songs.  The weather man agrees as it's supposed to be frigid here tomorrow (the 50s!), but I digress.  A BIG BIG thanks to Mr. Summer, Big Bang Logan, who sen 4 more cd's worth of summer songs.  I'm tempted to declare an endless summer.

A moment to say thanks.  Boss Logan provided several home-made mix tapes of his own.  They contain some real gems and some never heard before stuff by yours truly.  Shawn has been contributing for a while and I am deeply indebted.  And thank you TomK for your past contributions, some of which I may be unknowingly using.  Thanks to Mike Markesich for putting out the definitive and the only one of it's kind reference book on 60s garage.  The book is a must for all you 60s garage devotees. 7. "When I Woke Up This Morning" - Bop Chords - Holiday, 1957 - Harlem, N.Y.’s Bop Chords recorded only three single releases during an all-too-brief career at the dawn of the rock and roll era. To this day, there are no known photographs of the group. Yet R&B vocal group harmony fans fondly recall the sounds of The Bop Chords, their doo-wopping regional best-seller “Castle in The Sky” and the days when a group of untrained youngsters could go from a street corner to a recording studio to Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater in a matter of weeks.

20. "Please Let Me Wonder" - Beach Boys - Wikipedia: It has been said that "Please Let Me Wonder" was the very first song that Brian Wilson wrote under the influence of marijuana. The song was first released on the band's 1965 album Today!. As a B-side, it peaked at a number 52 in Billboard and number 46 in Cash Box. The contemporary Gilbert Youth Survey conducted nationally in April 1965 placed this song at number 9 in its chart one week. Due to the lyrics, which are filled with a sense of longing and uncertainty, it is, in a sense, a contrasting piece to Wilson's "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)".

"Lollipop" - Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs - from "At the Beach" 1965, first released by Ronald & Ruby in 1958 - Wikipedia:  The song originated when Julius Dixon was late for a songwriting session with Beverly Ross. He explained that his daughter had gotten a lollipop stuck in her hair, and that had caused him to be late. Ross was so inspired by the word "lollipop" that she sat down at the piano and produced a version of the song on the spot. Beverly Ross recorded a demo of the song with Ronald Gumm, a 13-year old neighbor of Dixon, under the name Ronald & Ruby. Ross' mother insisted that she use a pseudonym for safety reasons, because they were an interracial duo.[3]
RCA got hold of it and Dixon, who owned the master and had produced the demo, agreed to let them release it. Ronald and Ruby's version rose up the chart reaching #20.
